Patient Education
At the Tulane Abdominal Transplant Institute, we believe that patient education and understanding of your medical issues is the key to successful transplantation. We take the role of educator very seriously and encourage family members, as well as patients, to be involved.
General information is given to potential recipients well before they are listed and continues during the evaluation process. We believe an introduction to what transplant is and the commitment it requires, is essential. Once a patient undergoes transplant, we begin intensive training right after surgery with both the patient and the caregivers. Our dedicated inpatient transplant coordinator oversees this teaching and organizes the discharge planning. We understand that receiving a transplant is overwhelming and there is an excess of new information. To this end, our teaching continues in the outpatient setting and your coordinator will remain a primary resource.
